The road is clear for a review of speed limits
SIR – You report (July 26) that Highways England has acknowledged that increasing the speed limit through motorway roadworks to 60 mph is likely to result in more motorists adhering to the limit, as well as increasing traffic flow and reducing driver frustration.
I hope this will lead to a review of all speed limits, which in many cases appear to have been devised arbitrarily. In particular, the maximum speed on motorways, of 70 mph, is far too low. Increasing it to 80 or 85 mph would, I’m sure, have similarly beneficial effects.
