Storm to bring power cuts and travel chaos

- By Phoebe Southworth

ANOTHER storm will batter Britain this week, forecasters predicted, with 60mph winds causing power cuts.

Powerful gusts and heavy rain are expected to hit the country on Tuesday and Wednesday as a second bout of miserable weather moves in from the Atlantic, according to the Met Office. Wind warnings are in place on both days in areas including London, Birmingham and Cardiff, with temporary power cuts and delays to flights and trains expected.

Greg Dewhurst, a senior meteorologist at the Met Office, said: “Gusts will be in the range of 50-60mph.” The RAC has urged drivers to take extra care when travelling on roads in the coming days. Rod Dennis, from the motoring organisation, said: “This spell of autumnal-feeling weather is going to make driving conditions very unpleasant for a lot of us.

“Strong winds will mean journeys by road will take longer than usual, and could be affected by fallen branches on the roads. Add in some very intense rainfall and drivers will need to take real care to complete their trips safely.”

The warning came after a 15-year-old girl died after falling into a river in Cardiff. Nicola Williams was playing with friends on the banks of the Rhymney when she fell into the fast-flowing water and was swept away by the current on Friday evening.

Emotional tributes to the schoolgirl were posted on social media. One friend wrote: “Can’t believe what’s happened. I love you so much. I will see you again soon.”
