Google Maps removes ‘fatal’ Ben Nevis routes

-

Google has updated its mapping service after criticism for suggesting routes up Ben Nevis and other munros that are “potentially fatal”.

Certain searches for routes on Google Maps took users to the car park nearest to the summit as the crow flies then indicated a walking route that was “highly dangerous, even for experienced climbers”, the John Muir Trust had warned.

The charity said that walkers following downloaded routes had suffered “injury or worse”. Google said: “We’re now updating our driving routes to take people directly to the visitor centre, where they can speak with staff about the best trail to take.”
