Mixed signals Why some phones do not get alerted

A number of elements can affect a phone’s Bluetooth signal, which the NHS Covid app relies on to detect how close other people are.

The main hindrance is physical barriers such as walls, furniture and metal surfaces that weaken or block Bluetooth radio waves.

But if left long enough, the app can detect other phones through thin walls and Perspex glass, even if their owners are physically separated.
