Film choice
West Side Story (1961) BBC TWO, 1.50PM ★★★★★
The vertiginous energy and heart make this one of the greatest musicals ever put to screen. Jerome Robbins’s inspired choreography needs the biggest canvas it can get; when the film’s firing on all cylinders of music, lyrics and motion, little can touch it. Natalie Wood and Richard Beymer are star-crossed lovers from opposite sides of the tracks, while Leonard Bernstein’s heady score perfectly aids their battle.
Williams: Formula 1 in the Blood (2017) BBC FOUR, 10PM ★★★★
Williams is the second-mostsuccessful team in Formula One history (after only Ferrari), and, as a family team fighting against the big dogs, is an overwhelming fan favourite. Morgan Matthews’s enthralling documentary sees Sir Frank Williams take his team from a 1977 shoestring start to Eighties and Nineties glory with Nigel Mansell and Alain Prost.
The Limehouse Golem (2016) BBC ONE, 10.30PM ★★★★
Bill Nighy’s Scotland Yard inspector John Kildare investigates a seemingly unsolvable spate of nasty murders in Limehouse in this feminist-flavoured take on Peter Ackroyd’s Victoriana whodunit, directed by Juan Carlos Medina. Steeped in cold and murky hues and atmospheric settings, it’s packed with drama and excellent performances. It’s hokum, yes, but it’s glorious nonetheless.
