Mellow start and midweek dip as autumn advances

- Peter Stanford

IT HAS of late been everything we could have hoped for in a September: largely dry, pleasantly warm and, for the most part, pretty windless (though that has had a negative impact on our renewable energy production at a time of rising gas prices). And into the start of next week, our luck will continue to hold – but as October prepares to make its debut on Friday, things will begin to shift.

With the jet stream away to the north of UK, we are on the right side of it to suck in warm, mild air for the south west. That is what made yesterday such an enjoyable day in southern parts and it will happen again today, perhaps even more markedly, spreading the benefits further north. Expect a largely dry day, with plenty of sunshine and a lovely warming breeze lifting temperatures as high as 73F (23C) in East Anglia, 72C (22C) in London and 70F (21C) in Liverpool. Further north, Glasgow and Edinburgh will see a decent 66F (19C) and Belfast 64F (18C).

The only clouds on the horizons will come from the low pressure over France, which could just slip over the Channel into south-east England, bringing a few showers. Meanwhile over in the west, low pressure has been gathering and will push a weather front in overnight into Monday, delivering blustery showers and cooler air across the country as it progresses.

That pattern will continue on Tuesday as the jet stream starts to trough and slip down over the UK, delivering more low pressure, more rain and a gloomier feel to things – though it will be interrupted as the weekend approaches by ridges of high pressure, calming everything down and pushing up the mercury. But their presence will be brief. Autumn is well and truly on the march.
