A shining example to the heritage industry

-

SIR – I was interested to read your report (September 19) on the “rebranding” of Mont Saint-Michel.

We recently visited its British “sister” site – St Michael’s Mount in Cornwall. This is a fraction of the size, at a mere 57 acres compared with 247. The island is beautifully maintained, with its impressive castle and rock gardens. It has 30 inhabitants, two tasteful shops and a picturesque small harbour. The Mount is owned by the National Trust but the St Aubyn family help to manage it.

It is an outstanding example of the balance that can be struck between tourist attraction, heritage conservation site and family home, and a credit to all those involved. Michael Saunders
