SIR – Mark C O’Flaherty (Travel, January 23) reviews the Fellows House hotel in Cambridge, “just a 15-minute walk from all the cobbles, quads and punts”.

I would remind him that, while there is another place that does use the term “quads”, in Cambridge they are known as courts.

The only exception might be Tom Sharpe’s 1974 satire, Porterhouse Blue, in which the fictional college has a quad, and which drew the comment from Lord Lexden: “The Oxonian term has always been anathema to those fortunate to study beside the gentle Cam, where the colleges provide courts for recreation and noisy demonstration”.
