Takeaway units turned down over obesity fears
Plans for takeaway units have been refused by a council over fears of obesity in the area.
The Dunes entertainment complex in South Shields wanted to place two converted shipping containers outside to sell hot food. But South Tyneside council said the plan could interfere with an anti-obesity drive, and insufficient detail had been provided on what foods would be offered.
Its public health department said the takeaways would be in an area where a third of children in Year 6 are very overweight or obese. The decision can be challenged if the applicant lodges an appeal with the Secretary of State.
