The mystery of the missing Dorset knobs

-

SIR – As a nostalgic Dorsetman I was sorry to hear of Judy Harfield’s difficulty in finding a supply of Dorset knob biscuits (Letters, February 13).

Perhaps that also explains why the annual Dorset knob-throwing competition was cancelled again this year.

SIR – I was told many years ago that Moores Biscuits baked Dorset Knobs once a year only.

Apparently, when the ovens are switched off for cleaning, the dough goes in and, once the ovens are completely cold, the rolls will be ready. When they are all gone they are all gone.

SIR – My mother grew up in Beaminster, Dorset, and had a passion for these very solid biscuits, which she enjoyed with a spot of Stilton cheese.

However, my East Anglian-born father, an oral surgeon, disliked them intensely and had some concern for the potential damage they could cause to one’s teeth. Sarah Harrison
