Second memorial to Holocaust hit by shells

- By Blathnaid Corless

RUSSIA has hit a Holocaust memorial outside Kharkiv, in what Ukraine described as “the Nazis returning”.

The ministry of defence said that the Drobitsky Yar, a Menorah monument, was “fired on and damaged” by Russian forces.

“The Nazis have returned. 80 years on,” it added.

It is the second Holocaust memorial hit by shelling since the war began. This month, Russian forces hit a television tower in Kyiv next to Babi Yar, where 33,000 Jews were killed during the Second World War. The airstrike on the capital killed five people.

Nazi rhetoric has been a common feature of the war.

Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, announced his goal of the “demilitarisation and de-Nazification of Ukraine” on Feb 24, the first day of the invasion.

Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, has drawn comparisons between Mr Putin’s actions and those of the Nazis.
