Trigger alert row over Tube play

- Daily Telegraph Reporter

THE Almeida Theatre in London has been forced to review its trigger warnings policy after receiving a complaint over a play about Transport for London depicting suicide.

The organisation admitted that the trigger warnings for Stand Clear: the TFL Workers’ Play were not “as clear, specific and accessible” as they should have been.

Rhys Mann, who saw the production in north London on March 11, said he was “absolutely horrified” about the content of the play, which described someone jumping in front of a train.

In an email sent to the theatre after the show, according to reports by The Stage, Mr Mann said: “The lengthy, vivid, visceral descriptions of the act of jumping in front of a train, and tactics used by those who jump before they do so … led me into a state of total panic.”

The theatre has pledged to “reassess” the way it describes its shows.

In an email seen by The Stage, the theatre responded to Mr Mann saying that the production did not make the content warnings as “clear, specific and accessible as we should have done” and apologised. In a joint statement, the Almeida and Graeae - the co-producer of the show - said: “We have expressed how sorry we are that they had such a painful experience watching the play.”
