Joe Kidd (1972) Channel 5, 12.55pm ★★★

John Sturges’s later Western is a morally complex tale of violence and revenge. Clint Eastwood stars as the titular Kidd, a bounty hunter who emerges from retirement after being hired by wealthy landowner Frank Harlan (Robert Duvall) to track down a Mexican revolutionary leader, only to realise he is be being used. A difficult denouement can’t take away from a slew of worthwhile performances.

Evan Almighty (2007) ITV, 4.05pm ★★

In this follow-up to comedy hit Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey as Bruce, Steve Carell plays the news anchor against whose pomposity Bruce had railed against in the previous picture. After reinventing himself as a populist politician, Evan becomes a modernday Noah – told by God (Morgan Freeman, again) to build an ark in preparation for a second terrible flood. Big on talent, short on laughs.

All the President’s Men (1976) BBC Two, 11.10pm ★★★★★

This is a gripping, intelligent film by Alan J Pakula, based on the book by Washington Post journalists Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, recording how they uncovered the White House connection with the Watergate break-in and brought down a president. Robert Redford and Dustin Hoffman are a little too charismatic as “Woodstein”, a blemish in an otherwise truthful account.
