Heavy price to pay Rebuilding Ukraine could cost $1 trillion
Rebuilding Ukraine could cost $1trillion dollars (£768 billion) and will likely dwarf the repairs needed for Afghanistan and Iraq, experts said.
Russian shelling has destroyed $119billion of infrastructure including 5,000 miles of road and dozens of railway stations, hospitals and airports, Ukraine’s minister for economy said.
Yulia Svyrydenko estimated the financial loss Ukraine has suffered was $569 billion. Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president, has promised to restore “every house, every street and every city” and that Russia will learn the word “reparations”.
Vlad Mykhnenko, professor of sustainable urban development at Oxford University, said the figure of $569 billion is likely the price if Ukrainian contractors were used but the figure would likely double if done by the West.
