Council worker tries to mow artificial grass
SOUTH Somerset council has issued an apology after one of its workers was photographed cutting back artificial grass on a roundabout.
The unlikely scene was captured by a driver in Yeovil, who saw the council worker trying to strim back weeds that were growing through the surface of the plastic grass.
Nigel Castle, 49, said he was “absolutely amazed” at the “daftness” of watching someone cut plastic grass and that the damaged plastic should now be removed due to its negative environmental impact.
South Somerset council apologised and said officers should hand-pick weeds. It said: “Additional training will be provided.
“We are committed to protecting our environment.”
Mr Castle told the BBC that he was driving with a niece when he witnessed the scene and told her to take a photograph from the passenger seat.
“They’ve put plastic grass down, weeds have grown through it and they’re strimming the weeds,” he said.
“For me, it’s about the use of plastic grass which they shouldn’t be using.
“It is terrible stuff.”
