Three stabbed as 10 people attacked in Midlands town

- By Steve Bird

TWO men and a woman were stabbed in a Midlands town centre yesterday morning.

A 33-year-old man was arrested after the attack in Bedworth, just north of Coventry. Several people were also injured, Warwickshire Police said.

The suspect’s mental health will be assessed, the force added.

One of the victims, a man in his 20s, was in a stable condition in hospital on Saturday evening, while the second man and a woman were discharged.

Police believe the suspect, who is from Bedworth, attacked at least 10 people as he walked along Coventry Road and Gilbert Close just before 8am.

Police said victims were helping with the investigation.

Coventry Live, a website, said the attacker threatened shop staff with scissors before he was detained by police. “A man assaulted people coming from town and supposedly kicked a man’s dog,” a shopkeeper told it. “I heard he pulled a pair of scissors on staff inside a shop and then police Tasered him and arrested him.

“One of our customers was going into the town – the man had a go at him, then they came back up here covered in blood.”

Det Sgt Rich Simpkins appealed for witnesses and anyone injured to come forward.

He said: “This was a nasty incident which has left a number of people with injuries and I know this will cause the community great concern.

“The public can expect a heightened police presence in and around Bedworth to provide reassurance while officers conduct their enquiries.”

Anyone with information, or dashcam or phone footage of the area between 7.45am and 8.05am should call 101, quoting incident number 91 of 23 April. Details can also be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
