Today’s radio choice

- Gerard O’Donovan

Desert Island Discs Radio 4, 11am

Lauren Laverne gets the new run off to a potentially fascinating start today. Her castaway is Durhamborn Fiona Hill, a Russia specialist who has worked at the very highest levels of the US government, serving as national security advisor to Donald Trump from 2017 to 2019 – resigning just days before the call to Ukraine’s President Zelensky that resulted in Trump’s first impeachment. Hill’s assertion that the Capitol riots in January last year were a “dress rehearsal” for further civil upheaval also landed her in hot water, so we can expect some interesting and forthright views to be expressed.

Music Therapy with Edith Bowman Radio 2, 9pm

The first of three shows in which Edith Bowman meets six well-known guests to talk about music that has helped them in challenging times. First up are Snow Patrol frontman Gary Lightbody and actor Daisy Edgar-Jones. Lightbody’s choices include songs by Nirvana, Foy Vance and Marlena Shaw (one, he says, saved his life); while Edgar-Jones’s selection includes tracks by New Order, Al Green and The Stone Roses. Students might prefer to tune in to Classic FM’s Revision Hour (9pm), returning as exam season approaches, with tracks from Mozart, Einuadi and the Bridgerton soundtrack.
