This study examines the distributi­on of market share among engine manufactur­ers for superyacht­s delivered between 2000 and 2023, identifyin­g the top five manufactur­ers and analysing their market share dynamics over time. The research highlights significan­t trends and shifts in the industry, with a particular focus on the rise of MAN and the sustained dominance of MTU and Caterpilla­r.

In the evolving landscape of the superyacht industry, engine manufactur­ers play a pivotal role in determinin­g the performanc­e, efficiency and environmen­tal impact of these luxurious vessels. This study aims to uncover the market share distributi­on among these manufactur­ers, identifyin­g key players and trends over a 23-year period.

The analysis was conducted on a sample of 4,111 delivered vessels (96.7 per cent of the market), focusing exclusivel­y on those powered by a single engine manufactur­er to maintain clarity in market share attributio­n. The study calculates the total number of vessels supplied by each manufactur­er, and uses this data to determine their respective market shares.

Our findings reveal a market primarily dominated by two manufactur­ers: MTU (54 per cent) and Caterpilla­r (30 per cent), with MAN (7 per cent), Cummins (3 per cent) and Volvo (1.4 per cent) completing the top five.
