Luxon scores 22 points on prolific afternoon of rugby

- By CONRAD SUTCLIFFE

CULLOMPTON full-back Josh Luxon had a prolific afternoon in his side’s 37-17 win over Teignmouth.

Luxon finished with a personal tally of 22 points thanks to a try, four conversions and three penalties. He did not miss a kick all afternoon.

The prospect of a real hammering was on the cards at half time as Teignmouth turned around 30-5 down after a buffeting from windassisted Cullompton.

Teignmouth moved-up several gears in the second half and actually outscored Cullompton two tries to one.

Steve Luxon, the rugby supremo at Cullompton, said ruefully: “We were better in the first half than in the second. Teignmouth are a good side and attacked well. We gave away very little when they did.

“Although we were not so good in the second half we dominated the scrums and kept Teignmouth to only one try until injury time.”

Prop Kevin Davies wriggled over for Cullompton’s first try with just two minutes gone on the watch. Josh Luxon converted then added two penalties for a 13-0 lead.

Flanker Jack Grandfield was next over the line for Cullompton. Luxon took care of the extras and another penalty.

Teignmouth belatedly got on the board on 29 minutes courtesy of Jack Bowen. Luxon wrapped-up the first half by claiming the bonus-point try for Cullompton then kicking the conversion.

The second half was more of a contest as Teignmouth had the wind behind them. Pete Bilham’s try made a dent in the deficit. Jack Mayne converted.

Sam Cooke in Cullompton’s second row claimed his maiden try for the first XV midway through the half.

The last act of the match came in stoppage time when Bowen got over for Teignmouth’s second try.

Despite declining a conversion kick to save time, the clock ran down before the Teigns could rustle-up a bonus-point try.
