Diamond celebrations for popular heritage attraction

-

CELEBRATIONS start this week to mark the golden anniversary of one of Mid Devon’s award-winning heritage attractions.

The Tiverton Canal Co, one of the last horse-drawn barges in Great Britain, marks 50 years since it started on the Grand Western Canal on Saturday, July 13, and will begin the festivities with a special trip tomorrow, April 3, which will also see the launch of a new film about the company.

The event ties in with the launch of The Flock That Rocks trail, which will be held at the canal basin. This summer-long activity will see 13 swans located around the town for visitors to find.

The Tivertonian barge will start the season proper on Saturday, April 6, and in this 50th anniversary year there will be the introduction of a new trip.

Serenity Sunday Afternoons will run with an emphasis on peace and tranquillity for the whole trip, to allow everyone on the barge to listen and immerse themselves with this mindfull and magical horse-drawn experience.

And, on July 13, there will be a special open day to mark the company’s 50 year birthday.

There will be side stalls, live bands, the Duck’s Ditty Bar will be open along with food stalls, swing boats and a host of other entertainment. Also ITV’S Bob Cruwys will be there to open the event.

Phil Brind, who owns the company, said: “This year is party time for the horse-drawn barge as we celebrate 50 years.

“We have planning a number of events to mark our birthday as well as the open day on July 13. Also new for 2024 is our Serenity Sunday Afternoon trips, which we are introducing by popular demand as a result of your feedback last year, thank you.

“In other big news we will be releasing a New Tiverton Canal Co & Horse-drawn Barge Film on April 3.”

Citizens Advice Devon chair, Edwina Bradshaw, said: “Volunteers are the backbone of our service and are drawn from all walks of life.

“Our volunteers include people gaining work experience for the first time, those on career breaks, those looking for a way back into the workplace and people who have retired. We warmly welcome everyone, regardless of age, gender, religion, race or disability.”

For many volunteer roles, previous experience isn’t necessary because everyone receives thorough training. When you volunteer with Citizens Advice, you’re part of a supportive team, so you’re never working alone.
