New Lego bricks from recycled plastic

-

For the first time, Lego has made bricks entirely from a type of recycled plastic that can be found in bottles and clothing. It’s a big step forward for the company, which has set itself a target of making all its toys from sustainable materials by 2030. A recycled plastic water bottle can be made into about 10 Lego bricks.

The new bricks are just a prototype (an early version of something that’s still being tested) for now, so they will probably go through a few changes before they are sold in shops. After developing the new way of making bricks, Lego is now putting them to the test to see how well they work, compared with existing ones.

In addition to checking that the bricks are strong and sturdy, the company will also need to find out how easily the recycled plastic can be coloured and what shapes it can be moulded into. Lego has said that the “clutch power” (the ability to snap onto other bricks) of the new bricks is very good. That is one of the reasons why this version has been chosen from around 250 different formulas that were tested.
