The Week Junior - Science + Nature

The Week Junior Science+nature joined forces with The Tree Council for an exciting writing competition.

-

During National Tree Week, we announced the winners of our Story in Nature writing competition. We asked readers to explore the wonders of trees, wildlife and green spaces in words and tell their nature stories. We were blown away to receive so many superb entries. The talent on show was incredible and we thoroughly enjoyed reading the pieces submitted.

Our four judges – children’s writers Jasbinder Bilan and Ben Hoare, Saralom from The Tree Council and our editor, Dan Green – had their hands full choosing the winners! Jasbinder told us, “It was a privilege to read and judge all these brilliant pieces of writing. I was astonished by the creativity, imagination and strong connection with nature. Absolutelyfantastic!” Our winner in the under-11s category was Murmuration by Ella, aged eight, with specially commended entries from Tallulah (aged 10) and Henry (aged 10). In the 11–15 category, Some

Trees Stand by Finn (aged 12) was the winner, and Zoe (aged 14) and Luna (aged 12) were specially commended by the judges.

The winners received a year’s subscription to Science+nature and a £50 book voucher. The specially commended writers were given a £25 book voucher.

Ben said, “There were so many incredibly powerful and touching entries to this competition.

In my eyes they were all winners!”

All the shortlisted entries were collected in a Story in Nature ebook, which you can download for free from treecouncil.org.uk/story-in-nature. Hopefully, these fantastic stories will inspire you to get outdoors and have adventures in nature.
