The record-breaking barefoot runner
Bruce Tulloh was a runner best known for his record-breaking run across the US. In 1969, Tulloh ran 2,876 miles from Los Angeles on the west coast to New York on the east coast in less than 65 days, beating the previous record by four days. He averaged 45 miles per day. Tulloh was one of the UK’s best athletes in the 1950s and 1960s, and often ran barefoot. He held many British records and won the European 5,000 metres – without shoes on. After retiring from athletics he became a teacher, but was still running marathons at the age of 75. Tulloh passed away aged 82 earlier this month.
