Bruce Tul­loh was a run­ner best known for his record-break­ing run across the US. In 1969, Tul­loh ran 2,876 miles from Los Angeles on the west coast to New York on the east coast in less than 65 days, beat­ing the pre­vi­ous record by four days. He av­er­aged 45 miles per day. Tul­loh was one of the UK’s best ath­letes in the 1950s and 1960s, and of­ten ran bare­foot. He held many Bri­tish records and won the Euro­pean 5,000 me­tres – with­out shoes on. Af­ter retiring from ath­let­ics he be­came a teacher, but was still run­ning marathons at the age of 75. Tul­loh passed away aged 82 ear­lier this month.
