Asmara, Eritrea
End of war declared in historic meeting
Eritrean and Ethiopian leaders have met for the first time in nearly 20 years. Eritrea’s president, Isaias Afewerki, met Ethiopia’s prime minister, Abiy Ahmed, in Eritrea’s capital, Asmara, on 8 July. The two east African neighbours cut ties after a war over their shared border – in which 80,000 people died – ended in 2000. The two leaders signed a “declaration of peace and friendship” and say they will work together.
