Ancient fort is given World Heritage status
Thimlich Ohinga in Kenya – a 16th century stone fort used as a shelter for people and animals – has been given World Heritage status by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco). Unesco aims to build peace through culture, education and science, and World Heritage sites are considered to be worthy of preservation. Two other sites – the ancient city of Qalhat in Oman and Al-Ahsa oasis in Saudi Arabia – have also been added to the list of 1,089 other World Heritage sites.
