2018 Commonwealth Games
The Commonwealth Games begins on 4 April in Australia. Look out for these awesome athletes from the UK.
ADAM PEATY
England’s Peaty will be swimming for golden glory in the 100-metre and 50-metre breaststroke races. He’s already an Olympic champion and won gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in 2014.
ANNA HURSEY
Talented table tennis player Anna Hursey is just 11 years old. She’s thought to be the youngest athlete to represent Wales in any senior sport, and played her first junior international event when she was just seven.
KATIE & JOHN ARCHIBALD
The siblings are part of Scotland’s 16-person cycling team at the Gold Coast Games. Katie, 23, is an Olympic champion and 26-year-old John picked up three medals at the British Championships this year.
SAMMY LEE
Welsh boxing star Lee won gold at the Commonwealth Youth Games last year and is aiming for another medal this year in his first senior Games. Wales are sending seven boxers to Gold Coast – four men and three women.
CIARAN & SINEAD CHAMBERS
A brother-and-sister team, the Chambers siblings will battle for a mixed doubles medal in badminton. The Northern Ireland pair also took part in the 2014 Games together.
KATARINA JOHNSON-THOMPSON
On 2 March, Johnson-Thompson became the world indoor pentathlon champion. The 25-year-old from Liverpool, England, now hopes to take top spot in her first ever Commonwealth Games heptathlon. The heptathlon is made up of seven events across two days: 100-metre hurdles, high jump, shot put, 200-metre race, long jump, javelin and 800-metre race.
BETH POTTER
Potter will make history at the Commonwealth Games by being the first Scottish athlete to compete in two sports at the same games. The 26-year-old will take part in the 10,000-metre race and the triathlon.
DAVID CALVERT
Now aged 67, Calvert’s first Commonwealth Games was in 1978. This will be his 11th Games for Northern Ireland. He has won four gold and four bronze medals in Commonwealth shooting events.
