Elephant hawk moth

-

This winter, gardeners are being asked to protect the larvae of elephant hawk moths, even though they eat the leaves of plants. The Royal Horticultural Society says that saving the larvae will support the moth population.

LIFESPAN IN THE WILD: Once matured to an adult, they live for around five weeks.

HABITAT: A range, including gardens, grassland, hedgerows, sand dunes and woodlands.

DIET: The caterpillars eat fuchsia and willowherbs. Adults eat the nectar of night-scented plants like honeysuckle.

FUN FACT: The caterpillars have markings like giant eyes.
