Isn’t Dina Asher-Smith remarkable? I’m a huge fan of athletics in general, particularly sprinting. The speed, agility and sheer power on display for just a few breathtaking seconds is always extraordinary to watch. But I particularly admire the 23-year-old for her huge reserves of positivity and her beaming smile. “I would have loved to have won,” she told a reporter after taking silver in the 100 metre sprint at the World Athletics Championships on 29 September. “But this is more than you can ask for.” Running the race in a dazzling 10.83 seconds, she managed to set a new British record, and at the time of writing this letter, her chances of taking gold in the 200 metre race on 2
October were looking very good indeed. Fingers crossed!
Elsewhere in the magazine, don’t miss Luke Matheson on the Sport page, another budding young athlete to watch out for. The 16-year-old scored for his team, Rochdale, against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup at Old Trafford. He descibed his achievement as a “special, special moment”.
