Do bats always turn left when flying out of a cave?

-

Teague Stubbington Deputy curator of mammals, ZSL

You may have heard this fact, but it’s not strictly true. There are around 1,200 species of bat and some don’t use caves at all. Bats that roost in caves make decisions about which way to turn when they leave based on a range of information, including location of food resources, weather, season, predators and where their offspring are. They can definitely turn right as well as left.
