Wearing white

When the tournament first began, sweat stains were seen as improper and unsightly, so the dress code for players became “tennis whites” to make sweat as invisible as possible. Players still have to wear white clothes at Wimbledon.

The royal family at the tournament

The British royal family has an open invitation every year to sit in the royal box to watch the matches at Wimbledon. The Duke and

Duchess of Cambridge (Prince William and Kate Middleton) often go to the championships. The royal family’s love for Wimbledon dates back nearly 100 years. In 1926, the Duke of York (Queen Elizabeth II’s father), who went on to become King George VI, competed in the men’s doubles competition at Wimbledon. He is the only member of the royal family to compete but he and his partner lost their match.

Home of champions

Martina Navratilova, a Czech-US player, has won nine Wimbledon championships – more than anyone else. Switzerland’s Roger Federer, who still plays today, holds the record for men, having won it eight times. The most successful British player in the tournament is Fred Perry, who was the men’s singles champion three years in a row, from 1934 to 1936. He was the last British man to win this title until Andy Murray won in 2013 and 2016. The last British woman to win the singles title was Virginia Wade in 1977, when the tournament was celebrating its 100-year anniversary.
