England ace aims for Austria
On 6 July, England kick off the exciting Women’s Euro football competition when they take on Austria in Manchester. For striker Ellen White it will be a big occasion against familiar opposition.
“Last year I scored and got my 100th England cap against Austria and also scored against them on my international debut in 2010,” White tells The Week Junior. “We’ve played Austria a number of times. It will be a tough game but we’re bursting with pride.”
There are 16 European countries taking part in the Women’s Euro, including Northern Ireland, Spain, Netherlands, Germany, France and Italy. Games will be played at 10 stadiums around England with the final at Wembley Stadium in London on 31 July.
“We are super excited for the tournament to be in England. Hopefully lots of fans will get behind us and support us. We really want to put on a performance and for the nation to be proud of us,” 33-year-old White says. England will also play Norway and Northern Ireland in the group stage. The top two teams in each of the four groups will reach the knockout stage. “Having the Euros at home gives us another edge. I have a lot of pride being an England player, a lot of passion and it’s a privilege for me.”
