You may read lots of books and enjoy picking up new ones but have you ever written a book review? This is a short description of what you thought of a book. Sharing it with others lets them know what the book is about and could make them want to read it too. A review informs others about the story, the characters, the style and how it made you feel. Writing it in an engaging way makes it interesting for others. To celebrate The Week Junior’s Summer of Reading challenge, try writing your own book review. Maybe you enjoyed a great read recently or can remember a brilliant book from a while ago? There will always be someone interested in your thoughts.

Don’t worry about getting started. Begin by listing some important things, such as what you think was the best thing about the book or a key moment. Remember, though, that a review should never reveal any big events or things that will spoil the fun or the story for a new reader.

Start by writing about a book you have really enjoyed – this is easier than one you didn’t like so much. Reading other reviews can give you ideas for yours, but have the confidence to write in your own style. Saying that a book reminds you of another (give the title), or the writer’s style is a bit like that of another author, will help the reader decide if they will like it too. Use descriptive words and try to say everything in 100 words. This can be harder than writing a longer review but it makes it easier for the person reading it. Often people read several reviews before choosing a book. LoveReading4Kids is a website where you can read and share reviews. “It’s all about reading, reviewing and recommending,” says Deborah Maclaren from LoveReading4Kids. “Once a month we select the top book review and the winning reviewer gets a gift box and a Reading Champion badge.” Your parent or guardian can find out more at lovereading4kids.co.uk
