Love your mates

Friendships are important, so show your pals how much you value them.

Whether you have one really good friend or hang out with several people, your mates are important.

Making friends

Your pals are the people you choose to spend time with. You might have friends at school, mates who live nearby or other people you hang out with at a club like Guides or football. You may see them every day or never meet in person if you connect with them online. It doesn’t matter how many friends you have, what’s important is that you and your friends respect and care about each other and enjoy spending time together. If a friend’s behaviour is making you uncomfortable, young people’s coach Maria Evans says it’s ok to question it. “Being a supportive friend means you’re willing to talk to them about behaviour you think is off. It might be tough but hearing it from you could have a positive impact on them.”

Value your friendships

Evans says humans crave companionship. “Having a gang of friends and being part of a group not only makes you feel safe and seen, it’s also really fun too. The world is full of exciting things to see and do, and sharing these experiences with a friend enriches them.” One way to help your friend feel valued is to treat them as you would like to be treated. Think of what you would like someone who cares about you to do

or say. How can you do the same for your friend?

Be a good friend

Although you may be mates because you share common interests, like a favourite band or sport, your friends may be keen on different things too. Evans explains that you don’t have to agree on everything. “It doesn’t make that friendship any less special. Building a strong friendship means respecting and appreciating that your pal might have different opinions.” A good friend encourages their mates to be themselves and loves them for who they are. Evans says, “Embracing differences creates a strong bond.”

If a friend is having a tough time, let them know you’re there to support them. That could be by encouraging or listening to them. Giving thought to the fun activities you do will make your pal feel valued and your time together more enjoyable. Plus, you will make treasured memories.
