Hannah Ryggen: Woven Histories at Modern Art Oxford (01865-722733). A show charting the work of the great Scandinavi­an artist Hannah Ryggen. From the 1920s, she made “spellbindi­ng tapestries” inspired by world events, including the rise of Hitler (Guardian). Ends 18 February 2018.

Vivaldi Gloria is a highlight of next year’s programme for Harry Christophe­rs’ worldrenow­ned choir and orchestra, The Sixteen. It will be performed alongside works by Bach and Handel in a tour that takes in several British cathedrals. 1 February 2018, Lincoln Cathedral, then Derby and on (thesixteen.com).

After a sell-out run in 2016, Complicité’s The Encounter returns to London. Simon Mcburney’s one-man show tells the story of a National Geographic photograph­er who got lost in the Amazon in 1969. 14 April-5 May 2018, Barbican Theatre, EC2 (020-7638 8891). Just out in paperback

Jonathan Swift by John Stubbs (Penguin £10.99). A detailed study of the man described by the author as a mix of “stern authoritar­ian and cultural bandit” (Telegraph).
