Suspected marathon plot: Police in Berlin arrested six men on Sunday over concerns of a possible knife attack on runners and spectators at a half-marathon event in the city later that day. German police had begun a surveillance operation on one of the men after a tip-off from a foreign intelligence agency, as the suspect was alleged to be an acquaintance of Anis Amri, the Tunisian man who killed 12 people, and injured dozens more, by driving a truck into a Christmas market in central Berlin in December 2016. The six men were later released owing to a lack of concrete evidence to justify their detention, but the investigation is still ongoing. In a separate incident, a man drove a van into a crowd in the city of Münster on Saturday, killing two people and then himself. The police said the man was a “psychologically disturbed” German citizen with a record of making violent threats, and they do not suspect a link to Islamist terrorism.
