The first known studio recording of David Bowie singing is being sold at auction, after being unearthed in an old bread basket. The demo tape was made in 1963, and features a 16-year-old Bowie (then David Jones) singing a song called I Never Dreamed with his first band, The Konrads. They made it for the Decca label, but were rejected and the song was not released. The tape is being sold by the band’s ex-drummer, who found it in his loft while moving house.

An extremely rare pair of wildcat kittens has been found in the West Highlands of Scotland, sparking fresh hope for the endangered species. Spotted by a member of the public last week, the kittens had lost their mother, and were dehydrated and weak when they were rescued 24 hours later by the Wildcat Haven conservation group. The Scottish wildcat has cross-bred with feral domestic cats, and some estimate that there are only about 35 “pure” Scottish wildcats like these left in existence, which would make it one of the rarest animals in the world. The kittens will now be raised in a forest enclosure until they are old enough to be released back into the wild.

An Afghan refugee who arrived in the UK aged 15, won a place at Cambridge and trained as a doctor has now been awarded the Rotary International Peace Award for the initiative he started to help the country he left behind. Dr Waheed Arian’s charity, Arian Teleheal, allows specialist doctors in the West to share their expertise, in real time, with medics operating in war zones via encrypted social media. It has more than 100 volunteer doctors, who work remotely with hospitals in Afghanistan, Syria, Uganda, South Africa and Nigeria.
