Consultant dermatologist
Dr Robin Russell-Jones MA FRCP FRCPath is a consultant dermatologist specialising in skin cancer and former director of the Skin Tumour Unit at the Institute of Dermatology, London
Dr Russell-Jones is a very engaging internationally famous dermatologist with more than 35 years of experience in the NHS. He’s proficient in all aspect of dermatology, but has particular expertise in diagnosing and treating skin cancer, having run the Skin Tumour Unit at the Institute of Dermatology for many years and having established a regional melanoma service offering sentinel lymph node biopsy to patients with melanomas more than 1mm thick. He has more than 200 peerreviewed publications, mainly in the field of cutaneous pathology, melanoma and skin lymphoma. He’s dual qualified, holding both FRCP (Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians) and FRCPath (Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists). He doesn’t offer a cosmetic dermatology service.
Dr Russell-Jones now devotes his time to private practice and environmental issues. He’s based at the Cromwell Hospital in West Kensington but also sees patients at number nine Harley Street on Thursday mornings.
In addition, he’s happy to do video- consultations (VCs) via Zoom for patients who are uncomfortable about attending in person during the pandemic. However, patients will need to send good-quality photographs of their skin problem prior to the VC. Photos of suspicious lesions need to include a tape measure to assess the size of the lesion(s). If the lesion needs removal, then Dr Russell-Jones will undertake this at his Harley Street practice. Results take less than a week.
Dr Russell-Jones was also departmental head at a busy district general hospital for many years where he supervised three trainee dermatologists. The dermatology department at Ealing Hospital managed more than 10,000 outpatient consultations annually. Dr Russell-Jones therefore has extensive experience in all aspects of general dermatology, but uses super-specialised colleagues for specific investigations, such as patch-testing or laser therapy.
Note: patients undergoing surgery under local anaesthetic will usually be asked about their carbon footprint — so be prepared!
