Kelly in the kitchen
AS WE went to press yesterday, one of the borough's cooks was busy trying to prove she was the school chef of the year.
Kelly Millins from Shinfield Infants School was taking part in the South East regional finals for the McDougalls School Chef of the Year contest.
Her entry was Fish Is Swish: fish on a bed of cabbage and locally sources vegetable noodles topped with a ginger and courgette steam dumpling and a side of sweet chilli.
For dessert she was making Banana Bake Is The Cake: a 2020 sugar compliant banana cake with lemongrass infused custard and strawberry topping.
The contest took part at Premier Foods’ base in St Albans and sees the chefs have to prepare four portions of a main and dessert suitable for serving to 11-year-olds.
The chefs had 90 minutes and a budget of £1.30 per person.
The winner from this regional heat will go on to represent the whole of the South East of England, against nine other Regional Champions, in the National Final which is to be held on March 7. A Second place may be awarded at the Regional Final at the discretion of the Judges.
