Ian’s got the gift of the goal

-

IAN DAVIES was back to his goal-scoring best as Binfield made it five wins in succession with victories in both league and cup.

The Moles’ all-time leading scorer Davies has had a mixed campaign but bagged an 11-minute hat-trick to fire his side to a 4-0 win at Holmer Green in the Hellenic Premier Division.

And he followed that up with a match-winning brace as Binfield eased past Brimscombe and Thrupp 2-0 to move into the quarter-finals of the Hellenic League Challenge Cup.

Looking to jump into the top half of the league, Binfield flew out of the traps at Holmer Green and led 3-0 after just 13 minutes as Davies ran riot with a treble.

The hosts were ahead of Roger Herridge’s men going into the game, but the gulf in class was clear come full-time as Carlo Santoro wrapped up the win.

“Solid three points and always good to win away,” said boss Herridge.

“Pleased to be in the top half for the first time this season.

“Some strong performances with Ian Davies showing he still likes scoring goals and a fine debut by Dan Read, who made a massive difference to us.”

It took Davies a while longer to find the net at Brimscombe on Saturday.

After a goalless first half, Davies took his season’s goals tally to 15 with a second-half brace in the 2-0 win to book a last eight showdown at Wantage Town.

Binfield go to Shrivenham in the league on Saturday before hosting title-chasing Ascot United on Monday night (7.45pm).
