Tree collection helps raise record sum for school PTAs

The Wokingham Paper - - NEWS - By SUE CORCORAN

A Christmas tree collection service raised a record of £1,400 plus to help school PTAs.

The money is being shared between The Colleton School and Polehampton Juniors, both Twyford, and Robert Piggott Juniors, Wargrave.

Nick Wheeler of NW Property Maintenance, Old Mill Court, Twyford and his friend Adam Brown of The Book People, Twyford collected more than 170 trees from front gardens in the area last weekend and on Monday.

Customer services manager Alison Marchesi, 54, of Twyford, was delighted to have her tree collected. “It’s a really great effort, supporting local schools. It also means people don’t have to take their trees to the tip,” she said.

The whole £8 pick up fee is going to the schools. Mr Wheeler, father of former Colleton pupils, said: “A big thank you to everyone who used the service. We’ve raised more than last year: it’s awesome.”

He thanked his helpers including the PTAs, Adam Brown and Winson Woodcraft of Twyford, the firm which chipped the trees.

He added that last week’s Wokingham Paper story gave the scheme a big boost.

This was his third Christmas tree collection. Last year’s raised over £1000 for local schools from the sale of the trees and collection of them afterwards.

Tea for your tree…

RECYCLERS can turn their tree into tea thanks to a local nursery, writes Kate Nicholson.

Hare Hatch Sheeplands is offering a free cuppa to all its customers who use it to recycle their Christmas trees.

All they have to do is bring the trees to the car park of the Heathlands Road nursery. The festive firs will then be shredded before being turned into mulch, which will be used within the centre to help the plants grow.

A spokesperson for the nursery said: “We want to encourage people to recycle their trees in a responsible way and we hope the offer of a complimentary cuppa will encourage a few more to do so. The offer is for real trees only, not artificial trees.”

Trees can be taken to Sheeplands throughout January.
