NELLIE KNOWS

Just not cricket

- Nellie Williams www.nelliepompoms.co.uk

SEEMS like only yesterday (can’t read those words without bursting into Carpenters song) we were basking in Easter weekend sunshine and now it’s May with two Bank Holiday Mondays, elections, half-term and the start of A levels.

Seriously where does the time go? I don’t remember Bank Holidays being such a thing when we were younger but here they are and they are just so welcome bringing a four-day week to what seems like a long month, but it’s the gateway to summer. Hurrah.

The summer months three decades ago were taken up with cricket be it nets, selections, games (him, not me) and cricket teas (how many loaves of bread?)

I don’t profess to knowing everything (anything) about cricket but I did play when I was the only girl in my year at Holme Grange. My brother played and I used to bowl at him, though my technique was rather shoddy and he never let me bat.

I met my husband at a cricket match and our eldest daughter’s initials are LBW so it’s been pretty much part of my life for ever.

Let’s gloss over once washing my husband’s cricket whites with his Welsh rugby shirt: mixing red and white makes pink. Red faced, I trotted to John Woods to replace his kit and after that I was never asked or offered to wash them again.

It’s good to talk

One only has to Google (other search engines are available) “Wokingham in May” and there’s an extensive list of things going on.

I was interested to read about the Monthly

Meet Up at Wokingham Library, organised by The Wokingham Cancer Support Network who support people living in and around the borough that are affected by cancer. This month’s event is “Gardening tips and the health benefits of being outdoors”.

Hearing news of a cancer diagnosis and treatment plan is devastating for everyone, so being with people with similar experiences is invaluable.

Forty years ago my dad had bowel cancer and it was never talked about. Self-help and support groups offer a chance for people to talk to others and come together to share experiences and concerns. Talking won’t change anything but it will help to talk.
