Get on the trail to see some great art

- JOHN WAKEFIELD

FOUR of Wokingham’s villages will for this weekend be part of Henley. No, it’s no some audacious coup on behalf of our neighbouring council – they’re taking part in the 14th annual Henley Arts Trail.

Running across the bank holiday weekend, the aim of the event is to showcase the vibrant arts and crafts scene in Henley and its surrounds.

And with nearly 300 artists and makers across 33 venues, it is the largest trail to date. With 10,000 visitors expected over three days, it is a big deal in the arts world.

The idea behind the trail is simple: it sees the doors of artists’ studios, garden sheds, garages and village halls flung open to reveal the wealth of artistic talent in the area.

Guests can spend as little or as long as they like at each venue.

From skilled amateurs to award winning professionals, the trail covers the full gamut of arts and crafts. Larger than life sculptures, sit alongside delicate jewels; abstracts are juxtaposed against detailed botanical art.

New and returning venues for 2019 include Phoenix Textiles (Twyford), Ceramics and Wood: Works (Henley) and The Coach House Works (Hare Hatch).

Venues are free, with no obligation to buy and artists will welcome guests to talk about their work.

There will be art on show in Sonning, Hurst, Waltham St Lawrence and Twyford as well as Henley and Bix.

Organiser, Jo Keiller, says:

“The standard of work on show is exceptional. Where else can you see the work of an artist who exhibits internationally, alongside emerging talent taking part in their first show?

“Talent is often hidden in spare rooms and garages, so the trail gives artists the chance to connect with the public and the public to discover new and exciting makers.”

Many venues offer refreshments; some have demonstrations or workshops for visitors who want to have a go themselves, and all provide a stimulating and thoroughly enjoyable experience. In 2018 the trail venues also raised nearly £1,000 for local charities.
