The World of Cross Stitching

Stitch French knots

-

French knots appear as dots on your chart. To work a French knot, bring the needle up through the fabric, hold the thread down with your left hand and wind the thread round the needle twice. Still holding the thread taut, take the needle down close by – one thread or part of a block away. Pull through until a neat knot is formed. When you’re pulling the thread through, be gentle as you could tighten it too much and lose the knotted effect.

If you stitch French knots too small, try stitching with a thicker thread or use more strands together in the needle and then work the knot as normal for a ‘fatter’ result.
