17 Skating Rink, Somerset House, The Strand, London WC2R 1LA. The large courtyard of Somerset House is transforme­d into an ice rink for skaters to enjoy. Anyone who can’t skate can take lessons and there is a special section for children who can practise with bear skating aids. To 15th January. Tel: 020 7845 4600.

18 Christmas Market, Town Hall, Square, Northgate Street, Chester CH1 2HJ. Traditiona­l wooden chalets will sell a variety of festive treats and gifts. Plenty of locally produced food as well as hot chocolate and mulled wine to keep out the cold. To 18th December.

23 Christmas at Kew, Kew Gardens. Kew, Richmond, London TW9 3AB. A milelong trail through the famous botanic garden lit with more than 60,000 lights. Highlights include a choir of Christmas trees, a sparkling tunnel of light, giant crystals, Santa and a spectacula­r light, music and water display in front of the Palm House. To 2nd January 2017. 26 Christmas Fair, Chiddingst­one Castle, Hill Hoath Road, Chiddingst­one, Edenbridge, Kent TN8 7AD. The chance to do some Christmas shopping in a beautiful historic setting. More than 60 stalls in both the castle rooms and in a special marquee will offer a wide range of festive gifts including home accessorie­s, vintage wares, children’s clothes, soaps, candles, cards and locally produced food and drink.
