GET YOUR SEA LEGS
It’s been roughly 200 years since Charles Darwin set sail in HMS Beagle for an epic five-year voyage of discovery. Now, a special crew are following in his footsteps.
A “Darwin200” tall ship will leave Plymouth on 11 May (the anniversary of the launch of HMS Beagle) for a global study of the world’s oceans. It’ll be used as a floating laboratory to conduct the very same experiments Darwin completed all those years ago, measuring changes to the environment.
The aim is to unite the world in a spirit of conservation and educate 200 youngsters to become environmental leaders of the future.
At each of the 50 ports Darwin visited, a group of four young conservationists will temporarily board the ship, meeting the renowned scientific crew and beginning their training to help solve some of our most pressing environmental issues.
Lectures, pictures and videos will be published live from the high seas so we can join the adventure, and there will be a closing ceremony in Falmouth (pictured), where the voyage ends, in July 2023. darwin200.com
