THE LONG AND THE SHORT OF IT

- WITH GRAHAM GOUGH

Animals have been a favourite theme of mine. They act naturally and unexpectedly which makes for good pictures, but patience is needed.

This shot of two dachshunds playing in a brick pipe was no exception. The owner of the dogs had seen his pets go through the pipe one after the other and said it looked like just one dog, but photographing what he had seen was a challenge.

To start with, the animals would not go through the pipe together, so we tried coaxing them with food and their toys but had no luck, and after several hours we decided to give up.

Having a cup of tea before leaving and about to pack my camera gear, the dogs suddenly and without warning started to run through the pipe at speed one after the other. Picking up my camera I fired off about ten frames then suddenly they stopped as though posing for a picture with the head of one dog at the front and the rear end of the other dog at the back. A perfect picture and completely unexpected, but that’s animals for you – naturally unpredictable.

After more than 50 years as a photographer, Graham’s opening up the album to share his most amusing pics . . .
