NATURAL POETRY

- George Hughes

I know that I shall never hear An ode of joy so crystal clear As songbirds at the break of day That bid me on my earthly way.

Their music from the hedgerows long Is born above, angelic song!

They cannot speak as you and I,

Yet tears are welling in my eye As thoughts of love and life it brings, When in my ears their message rings.

Bards strive to capture sense and sound

Upon their parchment, words expound, Whilst creatures have no pen and ink Yet sing with hope and joy, I think, In masterpieces never read

But etched for ever in my head.

Mere verse is writ by folk like me, But nature is sheer poetry!
