South Devon Railway

The longest established steam railway in the South West, the South Devon Railway winds its way for seven miles along the stunning River Dart Valley between Buckfastleigh and Totnes, skirting past tranquil, river-hugging villages, water meadows and lush farmland. It’s this combination of chugging steam trains, heritage rolling stock and scenery that offer such a wonderful experience, no matter the day and in any weather. In Buckfastleigh, there is a gift shop selling model railway items, refreshment rooms and a riverside picnic area.

Buckfast Abbey

Nestled in a valley on the eastern edge of Dartmoor, Buckfast Abbey is home to a working community of Benedictine monks. Founded in 1018 by King Canute, the Abbey was an important focal point of the community until the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII.

The Abbey Church was lovingly restored in the early 20th century by a group of exiled French monks. Highlights for visitors today include The Sensory, Physic and Millennium Gardens, not to mention The Lavender Garden, home to no fewer than 50 varieties of this fragrant plant.

Becky Falls Woodland Park

Set within a stunning ancient valley, Becky Falls is home to more than 50 acres of woodland and streams teeming with wildlife. Visitors of all ages and abilities are welcome, with the Blue Trail offering a gentler stroll along the Becka Brook; the Red Trail, leading to a stunning waterfall complete with 70ft drop; and the Purple Trail, with views over the lower waterfalls from more challenging terrain.

You can meet some of the park’s furry residents at the animal encounter shows and the park’s zoo is home to Tosh, Lizzie and Letisha, Blue and Gold Macaws, along with Arun the owl. It might be tricky persuading younger visitors to leave the petting area – the rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens and goats will keep them entertained for hours!
