THE WAY OF SAINT MARTIN
Saint Thomas Becket was canonised in 1173 after being murdered while serving as Archbishop of Canterbury. His shrine at Canterbury Cathedral became the first to draw pilgrims from Europe who made their way on foot from the boats at Dover, stopping off for alms along the way.
This guide book by Liz Garnett offers a picturesque variation on that well-trodden route, avoiding the A-road that has since appeared and taking in the best of the landscape, vistas, villages and significant buildings of this part of Kent, including Barfrestone Church, beloved of the sculptor Henry Moore.
