Jordan has an excellent transport infrastructure with buses running between all major towns. There is a daily bus between Amman and Petra.
Within cities, it is worth taking taxis as they are not expensive. White painted ‘service taxis’ ride fixed routes and are shared. Private taxis are yellow, and have meters, but these are not always used at night. It is therefore recommended to agree the cost beforehand. It is considered appropriate for a woman to sit in the back of a taxi. Tipping isn’t compulsory, but it is customary to add 20 piasters (less than 20p) to the price of the meter.
